Cooler King is the most recent expression borne of the longstanding creative collaboration between Joel Buckle, Thomas Guerna and Jordan Dardis. Having met in the early 2010’s and bonding over a love of post-punk aesthetics and the craft of songwriting they found struck a nerve as Disco Volante. The project saw them contributing singles to PDX Pop Now! (in 2017 and 2019) and infamously turning down an invitation from Malcolm Gladwell to play a key party.
After recording the Three Year City EP at the Hallowed Hall and thoroughly gigging Portland, the band took some time to plan and dream. After some hibernation and vision questing Cooler King has emerged. With the addition of notorious jack of all trades Dario Durasanti on keys, melodic imagineer Paul Nkemontoh on guitar and missed connection Tommy Jack Pieper on vocals, the songwriting remains as sharp as ever and the sonic horizon as broad as the sky.
Dining Dead:
Seattle-born music project Dining Dead blends poetic lyrics, ethereal vocals, funky rhythms, narrative and melodic guitar solos, and an orchestral sensibility to create their unique sound. On their latest (Sophomore) album,
Is This a House? Dining Dead breaks traditional song structure and incorporates swing and funk-influenced grooves with classical-leaning composition and pop song feel.
Dining Dead’s lyrics range from poignant to nonsensical, with vocal and instrumental motifs adding detail, intricacy, and dimension to their songs. Guitar and violin riffs, operatic doubled vocals, and fuzz pedal use converge on their sophomore album. Emma Belmont’s distinctive unfolding and storytelling guitar solos often take center stage as the band’s second signature voice.
Emerging from Seattle’s DIY music scene, Dining Dead made their debut at celebrated local venues like Stone Way Café and Café Racer, and continue to perform in DIY spaces, at house shows, and on established stages all over the country. They have been on two West Coast Tours and one East Coast tour in the past three years and have played Belltown Bloom, Capitol Hill Block Party, The Crocodile, The Tractor Tavern, and more.
Francis Pigeon, known by few as “the dream queen” blends the lines of reality with her honest, ethereal and boundless lyricism. Her songs take on a world of their own as she navigates the dynamics of the human condition, carefully considering each outlook with ripeness. Don’t be surprised if the effects of her siren songs portal you into inner territory you haven’t yet explored. Like it or not, Ms. Pigeon will coerce you into contemplation, but never leave you without a lifeline. She is currently frolicing along the sidewalks of Portland, Oregon, befriending raindrops, rats, and of course pigeons.
